Archaeology and Cork City Council

Archaeological remains are a non-renewable resource and so it is essential that they are properly safe-guarded and managed. Cork City’s archaeology is protected through the planning process. The City Council recognises the archaeological assets of the city and the protection of this heritage is facilitated in its current Development Plan 2004-2009.

Cork City Council employs an Archaeologist in its Planning and Development Directorate. The duties and responsibilities of the Archaeologist include:

1) Development management for example:

  • pre-planning consultations
  • evaluation of planning applications and archaeological assessments
  • notification to the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, of planning applications
  • deciding on archaeological conditions for planning applications

2) Contributions on archaeological policy to the Cork City Development Plan and Local Area Plans

3) Archaeological testing, monitoring and excavation

4) Maintenance of a paper and photographic archive and database

5) Involvement in studies and projects, for example

6) Lectures, publicity and promotion

As projects occur within the City Council, such as the Cork Main Drainage Scheme, a staff of suitably qualified archaeologists is employed to either monitor, test trench or excavate. Current projects being undertaken by Cork City Council and which require archaeological supervision/guidance are the Shandon Streetscape Renewal Scheme and the Grand Parade Streetscape Renewal Project.
